December 2005-February 2006, oil on linen, 10”h x 8”w. Private collection.
This composition’s optical blending evokes patriotic American nationalism through its alternation of stripes and stars and its red, white, and blue palette. This motif imprisons the protagonist, the Apache Indian Geronimo, who rebelled against the occupation of Indian territories during the 19th century. Ironically, hovering above this symbol of fierce resistance is his people’s namesake, a 20th century American Apache attack helicopter.
