Statement

My artwork explores American identity through paintings and drawings that both subtly and directly consider this nation’s shared experiences as manifest in the lives of its people and environment. In scrutinizing the world around me from the post-industrial megalopolis of New York and New Jersey to rural New England, I select scenes that quietly and yet powerfully capture an essential quality of life in a particular time and place. Working in a representational idiom, I often underscore unusual or surprising juxtapositions that are observed realities. In so doing, my paintings seek to inspire reflection on the innate forces of change and contradictions that continually reshape our collective history, aspirations, and popular understanding.
